Storm Flooding Causes Damage to South Park Home?

4/19/2022 (Permalink)

Stormwater floods a drainage system. We are trusted leaders in storm damage restoration in San Diego.

The San Diego County website has a whole section devoted to reporting clogged storm drains. Our Centre City Uptown team restore storm damage every year in South Park and offers this information for reporting clogged storm drains:

  • If you see anything other than water from a rain event in the curb, gutter, alley, or street, please let the County of San Diego know. Some examples include but are not limited to: irrigation water runoff, oil, grease, swimming pool and spa water, construction waste (including sediment), landscaping waste, wash water, and power washing wastewater. All of these discharges pose a threat to the health of local waterways. Only rain is allowed down the drain.
    • You can email your report to swppp@sandiego.gov. You may call our Storm Water Pollution Hotline at 619-235-1000.
    • You can also use the Get it Done App. If you notice a violation actively occurring during business hours, calling the hotline will ensure the issues are addressed in the quickest way possible.
  • To report other water waste that does not reach the storm drain system, such as over-irrigation to sidewalks or driveways, please call the Public Utilities Department at 619-533-5271 or email them at waterwaste@sandiego.gov.  For more information about water conservation, visit their website.

Fire Damage Inventory Saves Hillcrest Residents Time and Money?

4/13/2022 (Permalink)

A person checks items off of an inventory list. We restore fire damage 24-hours a day in San Diego.

Fires can happen at any time in Hillcrest, so having an up-to-date home inventory will be helpful if things need to be restored or replaced. Our Centre City Uptown team offers this info from the Insurance Information Institute for creating a home inventory:

Use technology to make your home inventory easier

  • Take pictures – Create a photo record of your belongings. Capture important individual items as well as entire rooms, closets, or drawers. Label your photos with what's pictured, where you bought it, the make or model—whatever information might be important to replacing and getting reimbursed for the item. Use your smartphone or digital camera—some give you the capability to put in the description of the item when saving the photo.
  • Tape it – Walk through your house or apartment, videotaping and describing the contents. For example, you might describe the contents of a kitchen cabinet: "Poppies on Blue by Lenox, service for 12 that includes a dinner plate, salad plate, bowl, cup, and saucer. Purchased in 2015."
  • Use an app – There are many mobile app options that can help you create and store a room-by-room record of your belongings.

Showerhead Leaking in Centre City?

4/5/2022 (Permalink)

A shower is running. We respond to water damage emergencies 24-hours a day in San Diego.

Our Centre City Uptown team responds to more water damage emergencies each year than any other form of property damage. Knowing how to fix a leaking shower head can save you money, and it may prevent more extensive repairs later. Here is some information from the Environmental Protection Agency about shower head leaks:

Showerhead Leaks

A showerhead leaking at ten drips per minute wastes more than 500 gallons per year, and that's the amount of water it takes to wash 60 loads of dishes in your dishwasher. Some leaky showerheads can be fixed by making sure there is a tight connection between the showerhead and the pipe stem and by using pipe tape to secure it. Pipe tape, also called Teflon tape, is available at most hardware stores, is easy to apply, and can help control leaks. For more complicated valve leaks in showers that drip when not in use, contact an experienced handyperson or licensed plumber.

Tip: It's also a good idea to check and, if needed, replace the washer or "o" ring inside the showerhead while making this repair.

Fire Extinguisher Safety Tips for Little Italy?

3/29/2022 (Permalink)

A portable fire extinguisher is shown. We respond to fire damage emergencies 24-hours a day in San Diego.

Our Centre City Uptown team restores fire damage every year in Little Italy. Knowing how to use a portable fire extinguisher can save lives. Here are some fire extinguisher safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association:

Use a portable fire extinguisher when the fire is confined to a small area, such as a wastebasket, and is not growing; everyone has exited the building; the fire department has been called or is being called, and the room is not filled with smoke.

  • To operate a fire extinguisher, remember the word PASS:
  • Pull the pin. Hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you, and release the locking mechanism
  • Aim low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire
  • Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly
  • Sweep the nozzle from side-to-side
  • For the home, select a multi-purpose extinguisher (can be used on all types of home fires) that is large enough to put out a small fire but not so heavy as to be difficult to handle
  • Choose a fire extinguisher that carries the label of an independent testing laboratory
  • Read the instructions that come with the fire extinguisher and become familiar with its parts and operation before a fire breaks out

E-Cigarette Battery Fire in North Park Home?

3/21/2022 (Permalink)

A person is holding an electronic cigarette device in a smoke-filled room. We restore fire and smoke damage in San Diego.

Our Centre City Uptown team restores fire damage every year, and sometimes the damage is caused by smoking materials. Here are some smoking safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association:

Electronic Cigarettes

Never leave charging e-cigarettes unattended. E-cigarettes should be used with caution.

  • Battery failures have led to small explosions
  • Fires have occurred while e-cigarettes were being used

o   While the battery was being charged

o   While the device was being transported

Smoking Safety

  • If you smoke, use only fire-safe cigarettes
  • If you smoke, smoke outside. Most deaths result from fires that started in living rooms, family rooms, and dens or in bedrooms.
  • Keep cigarettes, lighters, matches, and other smoking materials up high out of the reach of children, in a locked cabinet

Put It Out

  • Use a deep, sturdy ashtray. Place it away from anything that can burn.
  • Do not discard cigarettes in vegetation such as mulch, potted plants or landscaping, peat moss, dried grasses, leaves, or other things that could ignite easily
  • Before you throw away butts and ashes, make sure they are out, and dousing in water or sand is the best way to do that

The SERVPRO team arrived quickly and immediately inspected and assessed the damage. They located water coming into the house through damaged chimney flashing on my roof. They documented and monitored the drying process to ensure my home was returned to normal humidity levels.

Truck Decontamination Services in Centre City?

1/25/2022 (Permalink)

A rat is standing on its hind legs. We provide deep cleaning and decontamination services for vehicles and homes in San Diego.

SERVPRO® of Centre City/Uptown offers a full range of cleaning and decontamination services. Here is a recent Google review:

Hands down, one the best and most professional groups of people I have ever worked with in my life.  . . .The amount of rat feces, and urine throughout the entirety of my crew cab truck, was enough to make most people vomit. Knowing that this could pose a SERIOUS health risk, but being completely lost as to what I should do with my nice truck, I called SERVPRO, and my ANGEL answered the call. Amy Bauer was extremely knowledgeable and explained step by step what I was up against. She dealt with my insurance company and the shop I took the truck to for a complete strip of interior and biohazard cleaning. SHE TOOK CARE OF EVERYTHING! Not only was she extremely professional, responsive, thorough, and forthcoming, but she was very empathetic. I dealt with some not-so-professional people during this situation. Still, I will say, If every office, and their employees, no matter the business, worked as hard as Amy Bauer and all the other staff at SERVPRO that I spoke with did, the world would be a better place!! Not only did she do “her job,” but Amy went above and beyond many times and also kept in contact with me throughout the entire ordeal of getting my truck put back together, just to follow up. Her dedication is second to none!! Thank You ALL for everything.”

SERVPRO® of Centre City/Uptown responds to storm damage emergencies each year, and we know the importance of preparing children for emergencies. Talking About Disasters

Find out which disasters are most common where you live, then visit our emergency resource library for specific tips on what to do and discuss. For example, if you live in an earthquake-prone area, your child should be taught to DROP, COVER, and HOLD ON.

Next, check at your children’s schools, daycare, or other locations where they regularly spend time. Find out what their emergency plans are so that you can reinforce them at home.

Share What You’ve Learned

Talk about emergency preparation with your family so that everyone knows what to do. Discussing ahead of time helps reduce fear, particularly for younger children.

Involve your entire family in preparation activities, such as assembling a survival kit. Children can feel reassured knowing there’s a plan in place.

Lightning Safety Tips for North Park?

10/18/2021 (Permalink)

Lightning is lighting up the night sky. We restore storm damage in San Diego.

I laid in bed and listened to the thunder and watched the lightning strikes light up the walls in my bedroom. My little dog was frightened, but he was reassured by my bravery. Over 100 lighting strikes were recorded that night.

September brought more thunder and lightning to North Park and San Diego county last month. SERVPRO® of Centre City/Uptown responds to storm damage emergencies throughout the year in North Park.  Here are some thunderstorm safety tips from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA):

Lightning: What You Need to Know

  • No place outside is safe when thunderstorms are in the area!
  • If you hear thunder, lightning is close enough to strike you
  • When you hear thunder, immediately move to a safe shelter: a substantial building with electricity or plumbing or an enclosed, metal-topped vehicle with windows up

Indoor Lightning Safety

  • Stay off of corded phones, computers, and other electrical equipment that put you in direct contact with electricity
  • Avoid plumbing, including sinks, baths, and faucets
  • Stay away from windows and doors and stay off porches
  • Do not lie on concrete floors, and do not lean against concrete walls

Fire Alarms for People Who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing in San Diego?

10/11/2021 (Permalink)

A fire alarm with a strobe light attached is featured. We restore fire damage in Uptown, San Diego.

People who are deaf or hard of hearing cannot rely on hearing a smoke or fire alarm to alert them to a fire. SERVPRO® of Centre City/Uptown responds to fire damage emergencies throughout the year in San Diego and offer these safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA):

  • Smoke alarms are available for people who are deaf (those with profound hearing loss). These alarms use strobe lights to wake the person. Vibration notification appliances, such as pillow or bed shakers, are required and are currently activated by the sound of a smoke alarm.
  • As people age, their ability to hear high-pitched sounds decreases. NFPA’s Research Foundation showed that older adults are unlikely to respond to alarms with strobe lights.
  • Older adults or other people who are hard of hearing (those with mild to severe hearing loss) can use a device that emits a mixed, low-pitched sound. In its current form, this device is activated by the sound of a traditional smoke alarm.
  • Always choose equipment that has the label of a recognized testing laboratory
  • Make sure everyone in your home understands and reacts to the signal (light, vibration, or sound) used in their situation
  • All smoke alarms should be tested at least monthly

  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.

  • Inspect showers and tubs. Check the seal and caulking around showers and tubs to make sure they are watertight and reseal if necessary.
  • When away on vacation, shut off the water supply to the washing machine and never leave the house while the washer or dishwasher is running.
  • Know the location of the main water shut-off valve in your home
  • Install an emergency pressure release valve in your plumbing system. This will protect against the increased pressure caused by freezing pipes and can help prevent your pipes from bursting.

Water Damage Happens in Hillcrest

San Diego County has had its share of storms, strong winds, and wet weather this year. Now that the weather is getting nicer, Hillcrest residents can inspect and make repairs to their home’s exterior to safeguard it against future water damage. SERVPRO® of Centre City/Uptown offers these maintenance and repair tips from the Insurance Information Institute (III.org):

  • Caulk and seal windows to guard against water seepage
  • Inspect your roof for missing, damaged, and aging shingles and make necessary repairs
  • Check your downspouts. Remove debris that may have accumulated in downspouts and rain gutters. Position downspouts so that they direct water away from the house.
  • Check sprinklers and irrigation systems to be sure they are not creating water damage to the walls and foundations of the house. Turn off and drain outside faucets to protect against frozen pipes.
  • Install gutter guards to prevent gutter clogs and keep water flowing away from the house instead of accumulating on the roof

Hoarding Situation in North Park?

North Park Hoarding Crisis Averted

When my aunt passed away, I inherited her home. I knew she liked to collect things, but I had no idea that her collections had gotten so out of hand. When I opened the front door, I thought the door was broken because it wouldn’t open all the way, and then I realized that it wasn’t the door, it was all the stuff in the front room blocking the door. My neighbor told me about SERVPRO® of Centre City/Uptown, and I’m glad she did.

They came out and helped me sort through all of her stuff. We sent a lot to charity stores, some things to women’s shelters, and some furniture and pictures we kept in the family. After all the contents were removed, the SERVPRO team thoroughly cleaned the house from top to bottom. By the time they completed the job, you would never know there had been a hoarding situation in my aunt’s house!

Cooking Safety Tips for Banker’s Hill

The leading cause of cooking fires in the kitchen is unattended cooking. SERVPRO® of Centre City/Uptown offers these cooking safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association:

Cook with Caution

  • Be on alert! If you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol, don’t use the stove or stovetop.
  • Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, boiling, grilling, or broiling food
  • If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove
  • If you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, remain in the home while food is cooking
  • Use a timer to remind you that you are cooking
  • Keep anything that can catch fire — oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains — away from your stovetop

If you have a small grease cooking fire and decide to fight the fire...

  • On the stovetop, smother the flames by sliding a lid over the pan and turning off the burner, and leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled.
  • For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed

SERVPRO® of Centre City/Uptown responds to water damage emergencies through the year in Old Town, and we offer some loss prevention and maintenance tips from the IBHS to minimize the potential for a supply line failure:

  • Turn off supply valves when not in use
  • Consider installing a lever-type valve that is easy to operate between uses
  • Do not operate the washing machine while the home is unoccupied
  • Leave a three-to-four-inch gap between the back of the washing machine and the wall to avoid kinking the hose near the valve connection
  • Inspect the water supply line hoses every six months
  • Ensure that the connection to the valve is secure, but avoid over-tightening
  • Hand tighten the connection first
  • Then tighten an additional two-thirds of a turn using pliers

Commercial Mold Problem in Old Town

When the roof to our office complex leaked, enough moisture came into the building to create a mold problem. There was a musty odor that I could not locate anywhere in the building. The next day I looked up and saw mold spreading across the ceiling where it hadn’t been yesterday. I called SERVPRO of Centre City / Uptown, and they sent a team out to mitigate and remediate the problem. Here are some facts about mold from our website:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or air conditioning, or heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture
  • Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed to discourage the mold from returning
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas
  • Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent

3 Steps To Take After a Fire in Your Home

5/6/2021 (Permalink)

Outside of a home in San Diego that experienced severe fire damage We can restore any sized fire damage that may occur in the San Diego area.

If your home in San Diego, CA is affected by a fire, you will likely want to begin the fire restoration process as quickly as possible. There are several measurements you can take to help quicken the restoration process.

1. Contact Your Insurance Provider

After a fire has occurred in your home, it’s often helpful to contact your insurance provider in order to learn what your fire insurance will cover. Though every insurance company is different, damage from a fire is often covered, at least in part, by insurance. By talking with someone at your insurance company, you can also learn about the next steps your company may require you to take in order to complete your claim.

2. Avoid Causing Further Damage

Although you may be tempted to enter your home as soon as possible after a fire, this isn’t always the best idea. By entering your home after a fire, you could potentially worsen any structural damage, which could slow down the fire restoration process. Additionally, disturbing soot in the home could damage property and could cause respiratory issues. It’s often best to allow professionals who have the proper equipment to remove items from your home.

3. Request Board Up Services

When a home has been damaged by a fire, it’s often important that the home is protected in order to prevent more damage from occurring. Boarding up your home can help keep out wind and rain in addition to making it more difficult for thieves to enter the home. Once your home has been boarded up, the process of smoke cleaning and making structural fixes can begin.

The fire restoration process can often be made easier if you know how to properly make a fire claim and keep your home safe. If you need assistance restoring your home, it could be helpful to get in touch with fire damage restoration professionals.

Being Proactive Can Prevent Plumbing Problems

Steps To Avoid The Need Of Water Damage Restoration Experts

Plumbing problems could be disastrous for your Centre City, CA, business. A water main break or broken pipe can cause massive flooding that damages valuable equipment. That is why you need to be proactive when it comes to potential plumbing issues in your building. Here are some steps that can help you avoid the need for water damage restoration experts.

1. Watch Your Water Bill
Many people just automatically pay their water bill every month. However, before you send in that check, you should see if your bill has gone up significantly in a short amount of time.
A hidden leak could cause your bill to increase. Therefore, if your bill is higher than normal, you should have a professional check for plumbing problems.

2. Pick a Reliable Plumber
Many business owners do not think about calling a plumber until they see a massive issue in their building. Yet during a flood, every minute you spend looking for the right plumber is another minute that the water causes damage. You should thus find a good plumber in advance. That way, you can call him or her as soon as you discover an issue.
Ideally, you can locate a solid plumber by reading online reviews. You may also want to pick someone who specializes in your type of business. Try out a few different pros before choosing the one who is best for your needs.

3. Schedule Maintenance Checks
Plumbers do not just assist during water emergencies. You can also hire them to check for potential plumbing problems. A plumber can check for signs of old or corroding pipes that need to be replaced. He or she may also suggest upgrading your low-quality plastic pipes to stronger steel ones.
To keep your commercial building functioning properly, you should avoid plumbing issues as much as possible. You can do this by checking your water bill, finding a reliable plumber and performing regular maintenance checks of your pipes.

What You Need To Know About Fire Damage If You Are a Landlord

4/21/2021 (Permalink)

worker wearing protective gear while taking of soot damage from ceiling, door have plastic barrier containment Fire cleanup services in North Park, CA.

In the case of an apartment fire in North Park, CA, it is not unusual for there to be some confusion over who pays for certain things. After all, the renter does not own the property, though he or she is living there and probably thinks of it as a home. Also, many of the items in the apartment belong to the renter whose possessions have suffered certain types of fire damage: smoke odors, burns and soot stains. As the landlord and the owner of the property, it is your insurance that will pay for any structural damage to the building.

Renter Responsibilities

It can often be difficult to unravel the different areas of responsibility between a tenant and an owner. In general, a renter should have his or her own renter's insurance. In the case of an apartment fire, this should cover damage to clothing, furniture and other possessions of the renter. While occupying the apartment, the renter should do the following:

  • Turn off all hot surfaces when leaving the apartment
  • Operate appliances according to guidelines
  • Avoid storing flammable materials
  • Avoid dangerous practices such as smoking in bed

Negligence on the part of the renter could invalidate an insurance policy. It could also expose the renter to lawsuits by the landlord.

Landlord Responsibilities
As the landlord, you are responsible for maintaining appropriate insurance coverage. In the case of a fire, you are also responsible for most if not all repairs to the building. A professional fire restoration company is a good resource for you to tap at this time. Highly-trained technicians can perform the necessary repairs to your building and make it suitable for tenants. They will also make sure the fire cleanup is done correctly and according to professional standards.
An apartment fire is a distressing event for everyone involved. With insurance and professional help, the recovery process can proceed in a smooth manner.

How To Protect Your Home After a Fire

House burned in San Diego, CA Home suffered a fire in San Diego, CA.

Protecting Your San Diego Home After A Fire

If your San Diego home has suffered a fire, it is important to protect the property from further damage. You can do this by being sure to board up and otherwise secure the property and beginning the restoration process as quickly as possible to minimize the likelihood of mold growth and other secondary damage.

Secure the Property
After the fire has been extinguished, the first step is protecting the property from wildlife, inclement weather and vandals. The following supplies often play a key role in securing homes affected by fire damage:

  • Tarps
  • Plywood
  • Fencing

Tarps and plywood are used to cover and board up broken windows and other openings caused by the fire. Security fences are sometimes installed as an additional layer of protection to keep animals and humans from entering the property.

Restore the Property
After the emergency board-up and other security measures have been completed, it is time to begin restoring the property. An experienced restoration service is often an invaluable resource in getting your home back to pre-fire condition.
In most cases, there will be water from fire sprinklers, water hoses or other sources used to extinguish the fire. Such excess moisture can lead to mold growth within 24 hours, so it is important to dry it up as quickly as possible.
When everything is dry, either you or a restoration service needs to begin cleaning up the smoke and soot and making repairs to fire-damaged objects. Depending on your skill level, you may be able to do some repairs yourself. More delicate objects, such as antiques and electronics, generally need professional attention to be restored to pre-fire conditions.
A post-fire board-up and other security measures can protect your property from outside threats. Quick and thorough restoration can protect your home from secondary damage, such as mold growth, corrosion and structural issues, caused by fire and extinguishing efforts.

4 Tips for Preparing Your Business's Exterior for Storms

4/1/2021 (Permalink)

Exterior of a building, windows covered with storm shutters Protect your business by using storm shutters.

It Is Important To Maintain The Exterior Of Your Building

Your commercial business insurance and relevant riders are all lined up to carefully cover your company for this year's stormy season in Gaslamp Quarter, CA. Your employees are knowledgeable about all of your safety protocols, and you've inspected the interior of your site for vulnerabilities and moved all important documentation out of potential flood zones. How about exterior maintenance? While it might feel like a lost cause to try and perform any repairs or make improvements when big storms are imminent, protecting your building from the outside can make a big difference in how well it withstands a storm's lashing. Here are four tips.

1. Secure Loose Objects
Complete a thorough exterior building inspection, starting with loose objects that could be tossed by winds and cause more damage. Antennas, trash cans, hanging signs, and benches could all become projectiles that damage your building. Secure them outside or bring them indoors.

2. Protect All Glass
From individual windows to large glass store fronts, protect your business by using storm shutters. There are many types available at various price points. At the very least, use duct tape over the glass to prevent shattering.

3. Clean Out Downspouts
Cleaning downspouts, gutters, and drains is probably a part of your regular exterior maintenance routine, but going over them an extra time right before a big storm ensures that water can drain away from the building properly.

4. Look for Entry Points
Keeping your building maintained regularly ensures that you don't have huge repair projects right before a storm. Check the roof, windows, doors, and foundation for any possible points of entry for water. Plus, if you do have to call a water damage restoration company to help clean up after a storm, you can be sure that the damage was a result of the storm and not poor maintenance.
Exterior maintenance of your building is an important part of your storm preparedness plan.

The Basics of Flushing a Water Heater

3/10/2021 (Permalink)

Man's hands unscrewing a screw-nut on a water heater with a wrench on a boiler Flushing a water heater.

Cars require regular maintenance to ensure optimum performance. In the same way, a water heater needs attention too. It is integral that you regularly flush yours. Over time, minerals settle out of the liquid, causing sedimentation. This can in turn lead to negative effects like lower efficiency and a shorter lifespan. Pipes can burst, creating a huge mess you need a professional cleanup and restoration company in Centre City, CA, to handle. If the deposit at the bottom of said containers calcifies, it may become near impossible to remove, rendering replacement necessary. To avoid this, you can perform a flush yourself or hire someone else to.

What Are the Steps for Flushing One?

There is a specific set of instructions you should follow when doing a water heater flush:

  • Turn off the heater's power source (gas or electric), giving said heater time to cool off.
  • Turn off the water supply
  • Connect a hose to the drain valve, making sure the outlet is in an appropriate discharge area, and open said valve, allowing the water to gush out.
  • Cut on a nearby hot water faucet to prevent vacuum formation and improve drainage.
  • Reopen the water supply for flushing, turn it off and turn it on again. Repeat until all particulate matter is gone.
  • Close the drain valve, refill by turning on the water supply and cut the heater back on.

What Are Signs One Needs To Be Flushed?
Some indications that your water heater needs to be flushed include lukewarm water, strange sounds and sludge coming out of your faucets. Banging, popping or cracking noises, temperature fluctuations and low pressure from the hot water tap are often caused by residue accumulation in the tank.

How Often Should a One be Flushed?
Opinions on this vary. However, a minimum of once a year is a good rule of thumb. You can do it once every six months if you want to be thorough.
Even if your water heater is not a tank one, it is vital that you clean it since it will also acquire buildup over time. Proper care can help avoid potential consequences and save you a great deal of money.

Why You Should Choose a Reputable Restoration Company

2/22/2021 (Permalink)

Reasons To Choose A Reputable Restoration Company

You want to find a disaster restoration company that understands your situation. This helps you keep insurance claim costs down and get top-notch services. It also ensures that you will have superior restoration work done. Here are some reasons to work with a reputable company.

Electronic Claims Information
Electronic claims work faster, so you can get the crucial information you need. Some of the information you can get from a company that uses an electronic claim system includes:

  • A complete job file
  • Access to all files
  • Informative reports on project results
  • Performance comparisons to industry standards

Emergency Response to Claims
Restoring your property after an emergency should be the company's priority. A qualified team will understand the importance of pretesting, mitigation, and quick response times.

Pretesting To Reduce Claim Expenses
Restoring a business is less expensive than replacing it. A qualified company understands this and will only replace property when necessary. They use techniques such as pretesting to try to salvage as much as possible.

Superior Experience and Training
Looking for proper training is the best way to ensure you get the best restoration work done on your business in San Diego, CA. For the remediation industry, you need to look for a certification from the IICRC. This means that the technicians who will be performing the work are the best in the industry and know the most advanced restoration processes.

Cooperation With Insurance Companies
Aside from performing quality work, a reputable company will offer other services. For instance, they will help you interpret your policy and adjust your claim. They can also work directly with your insurance company. This means they can perform any necessary tasks, such as pretesting, quicker. The result is that you can get your business open again as soon as possible.
There are a few reasons why you need to choose a reputable restoration company to restore your business. Whether you are looking for electronic claims or someone to deal with your insurance agent, this is the best option for your property.

4 Steps Taken During Sewer Cleanup and Restoration

2/11/2021 (Permalink)

Sewage water on the floor Call a professional restoration company to clean up sewer damage.

The Following Are Some Steps That Will Be Taken

Sometimes, a flooded toilet, sink or shower in your commercial building can result in damage from contaminated water. If this happens, a professional service in South Park, CA, can clean and restore the affected areas.

1. Removing the Water and Drying the Area
The first step of sewer cleanup is removing the water. If it remains for too long, it can contribute to mold growth and can cause damage to various building materials. Once the water has been removed, the building should be dried completely. Keeping windows open and using a dehumidifier can help with this step.

2. Cleaning and Disinfecting Surfaces
A sewer backup or plumbing overflow can flood your building with black water that contains waste and contaminants. Because of this, it is important that the area is thoroughly cleaned and sanitized. This will help prevent mold and bacteria from spreading.

3. Making Repairs
Depending on the cause of the backup, repairs may need to be done to the plumbing system in your building. Along with this, affected areas of the building may require work as well. Absorbent materials, like carpeting, insulation, and drywall may need to be removed and replaced.

4. Restoring Damaged Items
If your building is flooded, many of your belongings may also be damaged by the water. During sewer cleanup, a water damage remediation company can use equipment to salvage a variety of items, from furniture to paper documents. Some items can be dry cleaned or put in the wash, but highly-absorbent objects with severe damage may need to be tossed and replaced instead.
Because overflowing plumbing usually involves contaminated water, sewer cleanup is a must. Water damage often requires some repairs to the building and objects inside as well. Having this done by a professional service quickly can reduce the likelihood and severity of additional problems like mold growth.

How To Prevent Mold Recurrence

How To Prevent Mold Recurrence

Recurring mold growth in your Old Town, CA, business is unwelcome and frustrating. Fortunately, knowing the causes for the recurrence will help you keep the problem at bay.

Necessary Conditions
Mold returns for the same reason that it occurs in the first place: The conditions are right. The following are three things that fungi need to thrive:

  • Warmth
  • Food source
  • Water source

Most indoor locations are warm enough to support mold. Nutrient sources, including pulpy products, dust, and dirt, are regularly found in most buildings as well. The presence of water, however, can generally be controlled.

Prevention Methods
Even if a professional restoration company performs the initial mold removal, it is still up to you, the business owner, to prevent future growth. As discussed above, the presence of water is generally the easiest condition to control. If the area with the recurring mold problem is prone to high humidity, install a dehumidifier to remove the moisture from the area. Address water damage as quickly as possible and dry up spills, leaks, and all standing water immediately.
In addition to keeping the area as dry as possible, there are specialized products available that are resistant to mold growth. Common options include paints, primers, and fabrics. There are also sprays that can be applied to certain surfaces that are thought to help repel mold.
Another option is minimizing the number of mold spores present in the area. These spores occur almost everywhere, so it can be helpful to trap them in a HEPA filter before they have a chance to colonize. You may even have a chance to address two factors with one product if you select a combination dehumidifier and purifier.
Ideally, mold that has been properly removed would not return. However, this is not always the case. Fortunately, there are a variety of tactics available to those who are struggling with recurring mold growth.

The restoration process begins when you call us. Our representative will ask questions regarding the fire damage event that will help us respond immediately with the appropriate equipment and resources.

Step 2: Inspection and Fire Damage Assessment

We carefully inspect and test adjoining rooms of your property to determine the extent of the fire, smoke, and soot damage. This step is crucial to developing a plan of action.

Step 3: Immediate Board-Up and Roof-Tarp Service

Fire damage can often compromise windows, walls, and roofs. To maintain security and to protect against further damage, we can board up missing windows and walls and place tarps on damaged roofs.

Step 4: Water Removal and Drying (if water damage is present)

The water removal process begins almost immediately and removes the majority of the water. We then use dehumidifiers and air movers to remove the remaining water and complete the drying process.

Step 5: Removal of Smoke and Soot from All Surfaces

We use specialized equipment and techniques to remove smoke and soot from ceilings, walls, and other surfaces.

Step 6: Cleaning and Sanitizing

We clean, sanitize, and disinfect all of the restorable items and structures that were damaged by the fire. We use a variety of cleaning techniques to restore your belongings to pre-fire condition. We’re also trained to remove odors using industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment.

Step 7: Restoration

Restoration is the final step—getting your home or business to its pre-fire condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.

How To Take Care of Roof Damage in Stormy Weather

1/18/2021 (Permalink)

Blue tarp on roof A quick tarp on the roof will prevent water from coming into the home

Here is a common situation that many homeowners face every year: a storm sweeps through their area and causes significant roof damage just as another storm system arrives. Without quick help, the next period of stormy weather will cause even more damage to the home in Little Italy, CA. During this time period, it will probably be difficult to get a roofing contractor to come out to the property and make the needed repairs. One solution is to call for the help of a storm mitigation team in the local area. Trained technicians are used to working in emergency situations and are more likely to arrive on the scene in a matter of hours.

A Temporary Fix

When roof damage is sudden and severe, a temporary fix can reduce any additional damage to a property. A quick board up or a tarp over the roof will prevent water from coming into the home and spoiling insulation. The benefits of this approach are numerous:

  • It gives the property owner peace of mind
  • It allows them to stay in their home
  • It is quick and inexpensive
  • It prevents additional damage
  • It allows for future roof repairs

Wind damage can rip off shingles and leave a property vulnerable to incoming storms. A temporary fix can be a suitable solution at times.

A Permanent Solution
When the situation permits, the homeowner will want to take care of the roofing situation once and for all. This could be in the form of a quality roof repair or it could call for a complete roof replacement. If the roof damage has allowed significant water to enter the home, restoration services will be needed. This includes drying out areas that received moisture and checking for signs of mold growth. Experienced technicians will also replace or restore structural items that were harmed as a result of water damage. When everything is fixed and repaired, the homeowner should be able to face the next storm with confidence.

Here Are Four Tips To Help You Prepare Your Company For a Disaster

With storm season coming in San Diego, CA, disaster preparedness should be at the forefront of your mind. Is your business in a flood zone? Do your employees know the procedures? Here are four tips to help you prepare your company for a disaster.

1. Get a Risk Assessment
Before you can create a disaster plan, you need to know the possible disasters. Conducting a risk assessment will give you the knowledge to start planning. A local professional will be familiar with your area and can tell you what you need to prepare for the most.

2. Build a Planning Team
Companies have a lot of moving parts. To create a clear, concise emergency plan, you should include employees from all business sections and demographics. Building a diverse planning team helps you see all of the possible outcomes of an emergency and how to get all of your employees to safety no matter their needs.

3. Create Plans for All Situations
Business preparedness means being ready for multiple disaster scenarios. Different emergencies call for different plans. Sometimes, your employees will need to evacuate. You should have clearly marked exits, emergency maps showing evacuation routes and meet-up points outside of your building.
Other times, you might need to “shelter-in-place.” This means that you should remain inside your facility until the danger passes. Planning for these types of emergencies entails knowing what parts of your building are safest in which emergency. For example, move employees to a small room on the lowest floor during a tornado warning.

4. Plan for the Aftermath
Part of disaster preparedness is being ready for what comes afterward. Assign post-disaster duties to the appropriate people in your company and give them the information they need to get the job done, including important processes, employee communication plans, and the commercial restoration companies in your area.
Disaster preparedness is a large undertaking for any company, but by being ready for anything, you will keep your employees and business safe.

Water Heater Making Noises? Perform a Simple Flush

Water Heater Making Noises?

Much like any other appliance in your San Diego home, your water heater requires routine maintenance in order to continue functioning properly. Performing regular maintenance, such as a simple flush, can help keep your appliance running smoothly for years to come. The good news is that this process is quite simple to execute, even if you lack prior plumbing experience.

1. Turn Off the Machine.
This process varies depending on which type of model your home is equipped with. For gas models, simply cut the gas and extinguish the pilot light. Electric models can be switched off via your home's circuit box.

2. Empty and Flush the Tank.
Open your device's drain valve and allow the water to flow freely for several minutes until the tank is completely drained. You can switch on the faucet in your kitchen sink to help the water drain more smoothly and efficiently. Wait a few minutes before turning off the supply valve. Switch the supply valve back on once the water flow ceases entirely. Flush the water heater quickly before cutting the supply once again.

3. Refill the Water Tank.
Once you feel satisfied that all of the water and debris left in the tank has been drained, you may close the valve. Switch the water supply back on and closely watch the flowing faucet in your kitchen sink. The stream will start flowing smoothly again once the water tank is completely full.

4. Reactivate the Power.
After the tank has been refilled, you can switch the power on. Do so by repeating step one in reverse order. Double-check to make sure the water tank has been filled completely before restoring the power. Doing so with a half-full tank can damage your appliance. Your water heater flush is now complete.
Performing a successful flush on your water heater is a simple way to help maintain a crucial appliance in your home. Make sure to contact water remediation experts for assistance if you encounter any problems during your flush.

How To Prepare for a Fire at Home

Ways You Can Prepare Yourself For a Fire In Your Home

It’s often important to prepare for an emergency in your home in San Diego, CA, and having a fire escape plan can help keep you and your family safe. There are several ways in which you can prepare yourself for a fire in your home.

1. Take Preventative Steps

Having tools in place that can alert you to a fire quickly can be a key part of preparing for a fire. It can sometimes be helpful to test your fire alarm to ensure you and others in your home know what the alarm sounds like. Additionally, you should make sure to replace the batteries in your smoke alarm at least once yearly and replace your alarm once every ten years.

2. Know How To Escape

A key part of emergency preparation involves creating a plan to escape your house. While you hopefully will never have to use your fire escape plan, having a plan in place saves you the time of having to decide how to escape. Often, it’s best to have multiple routes of escape in case you are unable to enter a certain area. Consistently practicing your emergency escape plan will make it quicker and easier to escape if the need arises.

3. Plan a Meeting Place

In addition to knowing how to get out of your home quickly if needed, it’s also often wise to plan a place for you and your family to meet once you are all out of the house. It can be helpful to choose a place that is a safe distance from your home, such as a neighbor’s mailbox, to meet. With everyone agreeing to meet at one place, you will easily be able to see who is out of the house, and you will be able to provide emergency responders with accurate information.

Having a fire escape plan can help you and others in your home feel prepared in the event of a fire. If your home has been damaged by a fire, you might find it helpful to work with fire restoration experts.

Is Your Business Prepared To Evacuate in the Event of an Emergency?

While a fire emergency in the workplace is never expected, disasters happen every day in businesses all around the country. That’s why it’s so important to implement a fire drill plan for your employees and customers. By keeping a few simple guidelines in mind when designing your evacuation procedure, you can make sure your business in San Diego, CA is prepared for a worst-case scenario.

1. Pay attention to details.

Where is a fire most likely to break out in your building? How is the customer traffic flow designed? What are the locations of sprinklers and fire extinguishers? These are factors that will need to be considered when planning for an emergency. Map your evacuation route to bypass dangerous areas and allow for the fastest possible exit from the building.

2. Communication is key.

Even the most well-designed fire drill plan is useless if you don’t ensure that every employee knows how to implement it. Keep in mind that your employees will need to guide customers to safety in the event of an emergency, so it’s imperative that they have access to a printed evacuation route and are aware of where all the building exits are located.

3. Repeat, repeat, repeat.

Even the most level headed employee can panic if a fire breaks out at work. That’s why evacuation drills should be rehearsed on a regular basis to make sure that everyone knows their role in an emergency. Address any issues or confusion after each drill to develop a reliable exit strategy. Shift leaders and managers should have the contact information for a reliable fire damage restoration company to call after ensuring that all customers and employees are out of the building and first responders are on the way.

While no business owner wants to think about a life-threatening emergency in their building, it’s crucial to have a fire drill plan in place to ensure the safety of your employees and customers. By remembering to prepare for the worst-case scenario, you can prevent a tragedy from occurring.

Business Insurance and Water Damage Coverage

Drying equipment placed in building in Centre City, CA. Commercial water restoration in Centre City, CA

No matter how well you plan and the precautions you take your Centre City, CA business is bound to experience water damage. Regardless of size, weather and plumbing eventually will find a way to give owners a headache. While a water remediation and restoration company can get your business back to “Like it never even happened,” having business insurance eases the cost factor.

Water Damage Happens

Water infiltration where it shouldn’t be can happen to new and old buildings. The top two reasons are:

Broken Pipes – Since the majority of the plumbing system is behind walls, a damaged pipe can easily go unnoticed until there is no way to miss the problem, which may mean 100s of gallons of unwanted water.
Gradual Leaks – Along with pipes and connections to toilets, sinks and showers, other common items in a business have the potential to leak. Appliances, HVAC units and fire sprinklers all have the potential to slowly degrade and leak, which will eventually turn into a much bigger problem.

Know Your Policy
Water may be a life-sustaining element, but it can wreak havoc on a business. From rotting wood to corroding pipes, the faster water cleanup can happen the better. The longer a problem sits, even if it is hidden, the greater chance of long-term damage and mold growth. Unfortunately, the cleanup process isn’t always fast or inexpensive. Staying on top of your insurance coverage is key to being able to get back on track as quickly as possible. Most standard policies cover burst pipes, storm damage and leaking equipment, but additional insurance will be needed if located in a flood-prone area. Before damage happens, work with your insurance coverage to have a complete understanding of what is and what may not be covered.
Dealing with water damage can severely impact a budget, from downtime to extensive repairs. Making property insurance a priority is key to being able to make it through an unexpected event.

Mitigation and Restoration: Pivotal Stages of Property Cleanup

Mitigation and Restoration: Pivotal Stages of Property Cleanup

When commercial property owners in San Diego, CA call in a flood cleanup company, it's important to have background knowledge of the experts' jargon. This understanding allows for improved communication about future decisions, permitting proprietors to be a more active participant in the remediation discussions. Certified and credentialed establishments should use the words mitigation and restoration separately, clearly indicating that the work crews have two stages to handle. Both are key to the building's overhaul and getting the place back into operational status. When consulting with teams, here are three things to know about the procedures.

1. What Does Mitigation Include?
Mitigation focuses on fast containment; therefore, secure the property quickly, minimizing additional problems. After a flood, for example, a water restoration company takes several actions to reduce exposure and hazards. The employees can board up exposed windows, tarp over holes in the roofing, remove water-logged materials, create flood cuts, and dry out moisture-heavy rooms. These steps safeguard against further environmental exposures, trespassers, and mold.

2. What Does Restoration Entail?
Once mitigation is completed, the flood cleanup company begins restoration efforts. This stage typically proves slower than the first. While remediation demands swiftness to avoid complications, restoration requires patience and time.
Some assets may be treated rather than thrown away. Content cleaning services, for instance, may salvage electronics, photos and documents. Walls taken down are rebuilt and flooring is replaced. Painting and patching are completed. These services don't happen all at once but in phases.

3. Why Are Both Necessary?
A restoration company cannot skip over either of these key steps. Without remediation, excess water may linger within the carpets and walls. The humidity could allow mold spores to reproduce, only leading to future extractions and disinfection. Restoration in turn brings the place back together, functioning as a whole.
Mitigation and restoration are both necessary. Reach out to a flood cleanup company to assist. The professionals can advise owners about both processes.

Different Kinds of Flood Water Contamination

Which Type Of Water Is Flooding Your Home

While all types of floods are capable of inflicting massive amounts of water damage on your property, some are just inherently more dangerous than others. Floods are classified according to one of three categories, depending on which types of contaminants are present in the water. Read on to see which type of water is flooding your home in San Diego, CA.

1. Category 1: Clean Water Floods
Much like the name implies, Category 1 floods are characterized by an absence of contaminants. It is possible for these types of floods to transform into more dangerous varieties if outside contaminants are introduced to the water. Clean water floods are typically caused by:

  • Supply line bursts
  • Leaky pipes
  • Rain water or snow melt

2. Category 2: Gray Water Floods
Category 2 floods do contain mild amounts of contamination, but not enough to be considered a biohazard. If left untreated for 48 hours, a Category 2 flood can quickly become a Category 3. Gray water floods are usually a result of:

  • Sump pump failures
  • Malfunctioning household appliances, such as dishwashers and washing machines
  • Broken aquariums

3. Category 3: Black Water Floods
Category 3 floods are the most dangerous types of floods. They're categorized by the presence of human/animal fecal matter, raw sewage, dangerous chemicals and other types of biohazards. These floods are extremely dangerous and can inflict massive amounts of water damage, so you should never attempt to remediate them on your own. They're often caused by:

  • Toilet back flow
  • Sewage overflow
  • Rising groundwater
  • Overflowing banks from rivers or streams

It's important to take all types of water damage seriously, but you need to be especially wary of damage caused by black water floods. If not treated properly, the situation will only get worse and worse. It's best to contact flood remediation experts if your property has been affected by Category 3 flooding.

Water Damage Effects on Drywall, Wood and Carpet

Below Are Three Common Materials Prone To Water Damage

Unexpected water in your Uptown, CA, home, such as a supply line leak, affects the different materials in your home in different ways. Although seeing swelling wood or peeling paint may bring on thoughts of having to replace everything or extensive repairs by a water damage and restoration company, not everything is necessarily unsalvageable. Below are three common materials prone to damage and how they are affected by water.

1. Drywall
The biggest issue with drywall is that it is an organic, porous material, which means the chances of mold forming greatly increase. If you don’t know you need a water pipe repair, a hidden slow leak means water is slowly being absorbed into your walls. Unfortunately, the damage isn’t always visible. If you begin to see peeling paint, the drywall feels spongy or you see mold growth, the affected drywall will need to be replaced.

2. Wood
If your home has wood floors, furniture, and cabinets, preventing water issues should be a priority. Although wood is durable, it is still quite porous. It’s also important to remember that the home’s structure, such as beams, are also made of wood. Signs of damage include cupping, staining, and swelling wood. Taking fast action is necessary to avoid having to replace extensive and important wood features. There are also different types of wood, such as particleboard, plywood, and hardwood. For the first two, they are often treated to be water-resistant but can begin to sag or weaken due to excess moisture. If your hardwood floors are discolored and stained, there may be a good chance that a replacement will be necessary.

3. Carpet
While the carpet itself may be able to withstand a large amount of water, the padding below may not. The water source also is a deciding factor on if cleaning will be enough. If there was flooding or sewage involved, it is contaminated water. In those cases, replacement is a safer option.
From swelling wood to mold on the walls, the materials in a home aren’t always designed for excessive amounts of water. Luckily, there are experts available to help you salvage more than you may think.

3 Tips for Maintaining Your Business's Fire Sprinkler System

Three Tips For Maintaining Your Business's Fire Sprinkler System

Avoiding a damaging fire in your Gaslamp Quarter, CA, building is a top priority for any business owner. One effective way to do so is by installing a reliable sprinkler system. However, only putting the mechanics in place may not be enough to maximize safety. So, here are three tips for maintaining your business's fire sprinkler system.

1. Keep the Sprinklers Unblocked
Installing a sprinkler system is of little use if you end up blocking it. Water may still come out, but it won't be as wide-reaching and effective. Unfortunately, it's easy to block sprinklers by accident. These are a few possible blockages to avoid:

  • Paint
  • Wall or ceiling fixtures
  • Furniture

In order to ensure that you haven't made this mistake, try to take a look at each fire sprinkler once a week.

2. Get the Sprinklers Inspected
Even if you have the best sprinklers money can buy, chances are your system won't stay in peak shape. The last thing you want is your fire suppression mechanisms malfunctioning. Therefore, it's wise to have said system inspected on a regular basis. Keep in mind that this will probably include a test, so you may want to clear out any valuable items and electronics from the area.

3. Open the Control Valves
Water damage is unfortunate. However, what's more, unfortunate is experiencing a building fire. No matter how much you may want to, you shouldn't close the control valves. These valves maintain your sprinklers' water flow, so closing any would render the system practically useless. If you're worried about the fire sprinkler cleanup process, don't be. Commercial building restoration experts can be hired to fix the damage.
Sprinklers are one of your first lines of defense against a fire. If you allow your system to lose efficiency, you could be responsible for substantial damages. So, stay vigilant in your fire sprinkler maintenance. It may be difficult to carry out some of these tips, but safety is too important to neglect.

4 Kinds of Bathroom Supply Lines and When To Replace Them

12/14/2020 (Permalink)

1. Stainless Steel supply lines vs PVC Supply Line Stainless Steel supply lines vs PVC Supply Line

How Often Should You Replace Them?

If you’ve ever had a bathroom leak or a flooded bathroom, it was most likely due to supply line damage. Supply lines connect fixtures like sinks or toilets to your home’s main clean water line. Most bathrooms have at least three supply lines: one to the toilet and two to the sink (one for hot water and one for cold water). Keeping your supply lines in good shape is key to avoiding costly water damage cleanup in your bathroom. How often to replace them depends on the type of line.

1. Non-Braided Steel Lines
Many older homes in Uptown, CA, used supply lines made from semi-flexible, non-braided metal. These lines kink easily, making them especially prone to pinhole leaks. If your home still has these lines, replace them right away.

2. Plastic Lines
Plastic tubing is an inexpensive option for supply lines, but it wears out quickly, leading to leaks and breaks. Plastic supply line manufacturers recommend replacing plastic supply lines every five years.

3. Copper Lines
Copper lines are prone to a unique type of supply line damage due to their conductivity. The main water lines in many homes are made of galvanized steel. When copper supply lines touch the galvanized pipes, the copper lines generate a weak electrical current, which is fueled by the electrolytes in clean water. This self-induced current causes corrosion to the copper lines, making them more likely to leak or break. If your home uses galvanized pipes, you should replace any copper supply lines.

4. Braided Steel Lines
Supply lines made from braided steel are the least likely to break or leak. Many come with lifetime warranties and should not need to be replaced unless they show signs of wear.
A supply line leak can lead to a big mess. Remember to inspect your bathroom supply lines regularly. If you notice any signs of supply line damage, such as water spots, a musty smell, or any worn-looking areas, it’s best to replace the lines.

Property Got Mold? Tenants Could Sue

12/10/2020 (Permalink)

Property Got Mold? Tenants Could Sue

As a property manager in San Diego, CA, you have a lot of daily to-dos to keep the property in tip-top shape and tenants happy. While regular inspections should be done, sometimes the unexpected happens, such as a piper burst that requires a mold damage mitigation and restoration professional. When that happens, filing mold insurance claims is key to avoiding a potential lawsuit down the road.

Reasons for Suing
Although some issues may be caused by the tenant, when it comes to mold, it is often more associated with structural issues. If there has been an ongoing leak that you just haven’t gotten to, mold insurance claims will likely get you nowhere. Instead, if the tenant’s property is damaged, you may end up having to pay for their belongings to be cleaned. Below are viable reasons a tenant could sue:

  • Ongoing water issues have not been addressed in a timely manner.
  • The tenant has incurred expenses trying to mitigate the issue on their own.
  • Property and household goods have been damaged.
  • Mold has caused the property to be inhabitable.

Mitigate the Risk
No property manager wants to face any kind of lawsuit. To avoid that, mold remediation should always be a top priority. Whenever an inspection is done, always be extra diligent regarding areas prone to mold or mildew growth, such as showers, windows, washing machines, plumbing, roofs, basements and entryways. It is also a good idea to communicate regularly with tenants and encourage them to have safe habits to reduce the potential for mold and call whenever there is a leak. Most importantly, if a major water loss happens, make a mold claim and get it taken care of before it becomes an even bigger headache.
If left unchecked, mold insurance claims may not provide the most desired results. Staying on top of property management and communicating with tenants are key ways to avoid mold problems from spreading or lawsuits from happening.

4 Tips for Dealing With Water Damage in Your Building

Follow These Tips To Handle Water Cleanup

Most commercial buildings in San Diego, CA, will experience water damage at some point. Secondary damage, such as mold growth and wood rot, can develop days, weeks, or months after the original incident. Your initial cleanup efforts will typically determine whether your building will face secondary or long-term damage. Follow these tips to handle water cleanup the right way and avoid costly and invasive future repairs.

1. Reduce Your Risk
As the old saying goes, prevention is the best defense: Take steps now to reduce your building’s risk of flooding. Routine inspections and maintenance can help you detect wear and tear or weak spots in your plumbing and help prevent broken pipes. Keep gutters cleaned out, monitor humidity levels, and make sure sprinkler systems are properly maintained.

2. Begin Cleanup Efforts Right Away
If water damage does occur, don’t waste any time. Contact your insurance company and a professional water restoration company as soon as possible. The sooner cleanup efforts begin, the less likely secondary damage is to occur. DIY cleanup efforts are often insufficient to fully prevent secondary and long-term problems.

3. Ensure All Building Materials Are Dry
Cut out any wet drywall up to 18 inches above the waterline. Pull up damp carpeting, padding, and other porous floor coverings, and remove wet insulation and any other affected materials. Ensure that the subfloor and the studs or other framing elements are thoroughly dry before beginning repairs.

Use a Two-Fold Approach to Mold

When mold dies, it releases invisible mold spores into the air in an attempt to keep the colony alive. Therefore, it’s important to take a two-step approach to eliminate mold. First, kill any existing mold growth using commercial-strength biocides on affected surfaces. Second, use encapsulants or advanced filtration equipment to extract mold spores from the air.
Repairing secondary water damage is often costly, invasive, and time-consuming. In a commercial building, structural damage or a mold problem threatens your business, clients, customers, employees, and tenants. Under these circumstances, the potential savings of DIY water cleanup over professional water restoration are usually not worth the risk.

Homeowners Shouldn't Skip Emergency Board Up Procedures

12/10/2020 (Permalink)

Building Windows all Boarded Up after Hurricane Board up services in San Diego, CA

The Following Are Three Reasons This Step Cannot Be Postponed

After a blaze, residents are dealing with an overwhelming situation. Their place of comfort has been harmed, perhaps creating a deep feeling of loss as well as high levels of stress. It may be tempting to head to family and friends, thinking you can deal with the problem tomorrow. Waiting is problematic for several reasons. Homeowners in San Diego, CA, should board up the fire-ravaged property as soon as possible. The following are three reasons this step cannot be postponed.

1. The Land Is Vulnerable
The sparks created holes within the roofing and walls. In addition, the firefighters may have busted open windows to increase air and put in additional water. These efforts minimized the conflagration's destruction, but it left the premises exposed to other concerns. Animals may sneak in, making a new home within the walls. Rain can now seep inside, creating more moisture issues. Your emergency board up procedures block this from happening. Tarp and plywood secure the area. Contact a fire restoration company for professional assistance in this area.

2. Insurance Demands It
Walking away without protecting the home could permit the insurer to avoid paying for a fire claim. This step is considered negligence. Owners have the ability to safeguard. Not doing so, makes further complications personal responsibility. Board up before leaving to secure much-needed funding.

3. Liability Is a Concern
The fire damage peaks people's curiosity. Neighbors, particularly kids, might find it intriguing to look around. After all, easy access is tempting. The situation is dangerous. Walls and beams could be unstable. Glass might cover the floor. Someone could become cut or seriously injured. While owners may not have granted permission to enter, the refusal to close up the location could lead to a lawsuit down the road.
Allowing the house to remain vulnerable leads to headaches down the road. Board up a home first. Then, take some time to recoup. Both steps are important. Allowing the house to remain vulnerable leads to headaches down the road.

How To Avoid Accidental Activation of Your Fire Sprinklers

11/25/2020 (Permalink)

Drying equipment setup to cleanup water damage in San Diego gymnasium SERVPRO of Centre City / Uptown is close by and ready to respond to your flood or water damage emergency.

Thorough and consistent sprinkler maintenance is essential in San Diego, CA. Not only is maintenance important to ensure your fire sprinkler system operates properly if a fire starts, it is also a key factor in the prevention of sprinkler system malfunctions, including accidental activation. For as much damage as a fire can cause, accidental activation of fire sprinklers can be costly as well. To help prevent unintentional activation of your sprinkler system, keep these five factors in mind.

1. Perform Regular Maintenance

Routine inspections and maintenance must be performed appropriately. Otherwise, regular wear and tear may not be addressed in a timely manner, which can increase the likelihood of accidental activation. Regular maintenance in accordance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards can help alleviate this risk.

2. Prevent Freezing

If your sprinkler pipes freeze, the ice within them can damage the components of the sprinkler system and trigger accidental discharge of water once the ice melts. Sprinkler pipe routes should be assessed for freeze potential prior to installation. Antifreeze loops can be installed to help prevent freezing.

3. Address High Heat Areas

Identify sprinkler heads located near areas of high heat. Even without a fire, it may be possible for those sprinklers to reach a temperature high enough to unintentionally activate your system. In such locations, you should use sprinklers rated for higher temperatures.

4. Plan Ahead for Aging Parts

As your system ages, corrosion of pipes, fittings, and valves can become a concern. While routine inspections and sprinkler maintenance should identify issues in time to address them, it is important to be aware of these risks and plan for them in advance.

5. Exercise Caution and Care

Treat your sprinkler system with care. Do not hang items from pipes or sprinkler heads, paint over them, or otherwise modify your system without professional support.

Properly installed and maintained sprinkler systems are a key component in mitigating the risk of damage from both water and fire. Every business owner wants to be confident that his or her fire sprinklers will activate only in the event of an actual fire. Regular sprinkler maintenance with careful attention to detail can help prevent accidental activations.

3 Reasons Mold Grows In Residences

11/24/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO tech using moisture meter to detect mold in San Diego, CA Mold can grow almost anywhere. All it needs is some moisture and the right temperature

Here Are Three Reasons Residences Require Mold Cleanup

Mold is a common problem for residences in San Diego, CA. Water damage from plumbing, roofing or other structural problems can lead to mold growth. There are over 100,000 species of mold, including toxic black mold. All of these types of fungi are sustained by water and nourishment from organic material.

1. High Moisture Levels

The prolonged presence of excessive moisture or high humidity levels in a residence is the primary risk factor for mold growth. Whether a pipe leak or roof damage is the source, water can cause mold spores to settle down on household surfaces and start to grow. Mold commonly grows in places that are not regularly disturbed and remain constantly damp or wet.

2. Lingering Water Damage

Flooding or more limited water damage due to a pipe or roof leak should be extracted and dried within 24 to 48 hours of damage occurring. When a moisture problem continues, the environment becomes ideal for black mold to grow. Timely mitigation and restoration can significantly reduce the risk of a mold problem at a residence. Running a dehumidifier is also helpful for reducing indoor relative humidity levels to the 30% to 50% range.

3. Readily Available Nutriment

Mold is a type of fungus that feeds on organic materials. Drywall and insulation often contain cellulose, a plant fiber that supplies an optimal food source. Mold spores in the air are less likely to settle on dry surfaces and cannot draw on nutrients and multiply without interior conditions that support growth.

Taking measures to control interior moisture levels and prevent, mitigate and completely restore any water damage that occurs can reduce the likelihood of black mold. If you own a mold-prone home in Centre City, CA, you may want to upgrade to mold-resistant versions of cellulose-based building materials such as carpet, drywall and insulation.

Can Cleaning Restore Smoke-Damaged Electronics?

11/18/2020 (Permalink)

The aftermath of a fire in a San Diego salon We have the proper tools and experience to restore your fire damaged property.

Electronics damaged by fire will likely need to be replaced, but it may be possible for fire cleanup experts to restore appliances and devices that have only sustained smoke damage. There are several methods that may restore the functionality of items exposed to smoke.

Clearing Out Corrosion

Smoke contains acidic compounds and water vapor that combine to cause corrosion on metal components such as circuits. Electronics cleaning experts may:

• Remove corrosion
• Prevent short-circuiting
• Reduce the risk of an electric fire

It is unsafe to use electronics that have corroded components. It is safest to rely on the expertise of fire cleanup experts in a controlled off-site location than to attempt to clean corrosion.

Cleaning off Black Film

Another telltale sign of smoke damage is a black film that forms across internal electronic components. This film is caused by smoke and soot and:

• Adheres to dirt or dust
• Can cause overheating
• May prevent devices from functioning

Cleanup professionals can also safely remove this black film, which may restore the normal functionality of electronics. It is important to use specialized cleaning and repair equipment to avoid further damaging delicate parts.

Safely Testing Electronics

You may run the risk of starting another fire by attempting to test electronics damaged by excessive heat or smoke. It is safer to allow experienced professionals to attempt to clean damage and then test items in an off-site facility. In addition to testing, these specialists can provide:

• Data recovery or backup
• Proof of damage or loss
• Restored electronics

It is best to hand off electronics to a content cleaning service to have restoration attempted elsewhere. Items with irreparable damage should be claimed as losses and replaced.

Electronics cleaning experts are likely to have the best results when it comes to restoring electronics. Rely on a fire cleanup firm that provides off-site content cleaning and storage in San Diego, CA.

Some Facts About Mold

11/6/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO technician checking for mold in a San Diego office We are prepared to remediate your mold damage.

If you own property in San Diego, CA one of the many things you need to look out for is mold.

Unchecked mold growth can lead to thousands of dollars' worth of damage to your building and unhealthy conditions for workers or tenants. Below, we'll look at what mold is, how to prevent it, and if detected, how to get rid of it.

What Mold Is, and Where It Comes From

Mold is a fungus that is found everywhere, propagating through spores that are blown around through the air. Mold growth only becomes a problem in buildings with areas of high humidity, or where there's been water damage. Mold enters a structure in a number of ways, including:

• Doorways
• Vents
• HVAC Systems
• Windows
• Attached to:
o Pets
o Clothes
o Shoes and Boots
o Bags

There are thousands of types of mold. Common ones include aspergillus, found in food and AC systems, alternaria, commonly found in sinks and showers, and stachybotrys chartarum, otherwise known as black mold.

How to Prevent It

To prevent mold from becoming a problem in your building, eliminate any sources of excess moisture. Try to bring down humidity with a dehumidifier or air conditioner. A building with good ventilation also is much less likely to have a mold problem. Vents should always lead to the outside. Also, make sure that your roofing and plumbing are inspected regularly. Hidden leaks in walls or ceilings can cause big problems with mold.

Professional Help

If you detect mold in your building, a mold remediation company should be consulted. They can identify the types of mold present and take the appropriate steps to eradicate the problem safely and completely. They can remove the sources of moisture, then dehumidify, clean and disinfect using specialized techniques and equipment.

Hopefully, your building hasn't been affected by mold growth, and by using the information outlined above, you can keep it mold-free. But if you do detect mold, a quick call to a professional can get the problem under control and have your property back to normal in no time.

How FEMA Helps Families After a Storm

11/4/2020 (Permalink)

Hurricane Harvey disaster recovery centers staffed with recovery specialists from FEMA If you experience a disaster, always contact your insurance company in addition to FEMA

There Are Many Ways FEMA Helps Victims Of Damage And Flooding

When a weather disaster happens in San Diego, CA, residents are quick to rally around one another and offer support as families prepare for the process of rebuilding. Another great source of support is the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Often, FEMA's fast-acting and dedicated workers are first on the scene and available to offer aid where applicable.

First Response

When the agency arrives at the scene of a disaster, they will start making appointments with homeowners to assess damage. They are trained to do several things as they are assessing the situation. These tasks include:

  • Scan the scene, including the neighbors.
  • Carry a camera and notepad.
  • Enter the home and document the damage, room by room.

On the initial FEMA visit, homeowners should have documentation that they own the home. Following the initial visit, adjusters will inspect further.
Disasters can create many hazards in a home. As the family looks forward to cleanup, they should also work with disaster restoration specialists who can first assess the situation, and then provide professional clean up services.

Adjusters

The FEMA adjusters will measure rooms and get details regarding damaged materials such as carpets and windows. Everything that needs to be replaced will received detailed documentation. Following documentation, a dollar value is assigned to the value of each claim.
The homeowner's personal insurance will pay out claims first. If the homeowner doesn't have insurance, or is underinsured, then the agency will provide financial assistance to help replace what was lost. It's important to understand that the assistance program won't provide for all losses incurred, but only those deemed to be necessary and serious.
Experiencing a disaster such as a flood is never easy, but anyone going through one should know help is available. If you experience a disaster, always contact your insurance company in addition to FEMA. Combined, they can assist in getting you back on your feet.

Flooding and Risk Factors

Flooding and Risk Factors

The Federal Emergency Management Association offers the National Flood Insurance Program in thousands of communities across the United States. Taking advantage of FEMA NFIP can help you get your life back together after a flood.

Flood Definition

When most people think of flooding, they think of any sort of water damage. FEMA, however, has a stricter definition: at least two properties or two connected acres covered by water or mudflow. Flooding in this sense is often caused by the following:

  • Accumulation of surface water
  • Erosion
  • Overflow of rivers, lakes or other bodies of water

Only flooding damage that fits the above definition is covered by FEMA NFIP. Water damage caused by other events, such as plumbing issues, may be covered by your homeowner’s insurance. It is important to discuss your San Diego home’s unique needs with your insurance agent to make sure you are properly covered.

Flood Risk Factors

While the definition of “flooding” may be narrow, there are a variety of factors that can increase the likelihood of such an event occurring. The following are some such risk factors:

  • Springtime
  • Wildfire damage
  • Low elevation

When the temperatures rise in the springtime, snow often melts, causing flooding. Additionally, frozen ground cannot absorb spring rains, leading to accumulation of surface water. Wildfires also interfere with the ground’s ability to absorb water. Vegetation plays a key role in absorbing water, and when plant life is destroyed by fire, there is greater accumulation of surface water. This effect can last up to five years after a wildfire. Low elevations, where the water cannot runoff easily, are also more prone to flooding.

If FEMA NFIP is available in your area, you can purchase reliable flood insurance through the program. Although this and other flood insurance policies can reduce the financial burden of flood damage, homeowners may still feel overwhelmed by the restoration process. Selecting a certified restoration company can make the process go much more smoothly.

6 Ways To Reduce Outside Flood Damage

11/3/2020 (Permalink)

Hands holding mulch Mulch can reduce the chances of experiencing flooding in your property

6 Ways To Reduce Outside Flood Damage

Outside flooding triggered by heavy storms causes havoc, contributing to harmful erosion and polluting runoff. In worst-case scenarios, rainfall can cause structural damage to your house by seeping into your basement. The following are a few methods you can employ to protect yourself in San Diego, CA, before facing an imminent downpour.

1. Diversionary Systems
Water redirection is the most basic form of drainage. Depressions known as swales are excellent at this task. Create one by lining your backyard’s lowest point with rocks and plants so that streams are redirected into a dry well or garden bed that is able to sustain large amounts of rain.

2. Hefty Mulching
Outside flooding tosses around lighter mulch. Use heavier chips and reduce your post-precipitation cleanup responsibilities.

3. Flower Placement
Plants that line the outside of gardens drain quickly, whereas those in the middle bear the brunt of intense disruptions. Arrange yours so that plants most effective at soaking up water are placed in the center.

4. Strategic Downspouts
Check that your gutters direct rain storm deposits into a location where the overall accumulation will not spill over. If you believe your downspout’s landing spot could result in difficulties, installing a diverter can solve your rain drainage situation.

5. Pavement Alternatives
Driveways are contributors to runoff. If yours is made of asphalt or solid concrete, trade it out for gravel or spaced paving. Eco-friendly individuals should consider replacing their entranceways entirely and converting them into extended lawn space.

6. Green Roofing
For novelty, you cannot beat topping your residence with grass to soak up rainwater. Of course, this option only works with flat-topped or gently sloped buildings, but this approach also improves insulation and increases roof longevity.
Uncontrolled outside flooding causes backyard messes and sometimes leads to significant home damage. Head off needing a commercial water restoration service to make things right by setting the optimal conditions for severe weather.

What you should know about mold

A photo of a building. Here is a photo showing mold damage to a property in San Diego. SERVPRO of Centre City/Uptown assisted in remediation.

If you are on Google searching for clues about mold, you probably suspect you have a mold growth issue in your home or business.  Allow SERVPRO of Centre City/Uptown to educate you, per the EPA.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, there are a few things you should know about mold:

  1. There is no practical way to eliminate all molds and mold spores in the indoor environment; the way to control indoor mold growth is to control moisture.
  2. If mold is a problem in your home or school, you must clean up the mold and eliminate sources of moisture.
  3. Fix the source of the water problem or leak to prevent mold growth.
  4. Reduce indoor humidity (to 30-60%) to decrease mold growth by:
    • Venting bathrooms, dryers and other moisture-generating sources to the outside
    • Using air conditioners and de-humidifiers
    • Increasing ventilation
    • Using exhaust fans whenever cooking, dishwashing and cleaning
  5. Clean and dry any damp or wet building materials and furnishings within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth.
  6. Clean mold off hard surfaces with water and detergent, and dry completely. Absorbent materials such as ceiling tiles, that are moldy, may need to be replaced.
  7. Prevent condensation: Reduce the potential for condensation on cold surfaces (i.e., windows, piping, exterior walls, roof, or floors) by adding insulation.
  8. In areas where there is a perpetual moisture problem, do not install carpeting (i.e., by drinking fountains, by classroom sinks, or on concrete floors with leaks or frequent condensation).
  9. Molds can be found almost anywhere; they can grow on virtually any substance, providing moisture is present. There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, and foods.

If you do have a mold issue, SERVPRO of Centre City/Uptown is here to help and restore your property “Like it never even happened.” Call us anytime at 619-583-2133.
