Leaking Toilet Causes Structural Damage to Bathroom Floor in Hillcrest?

7/11/2023 (Permalink)

A child is flushing a toilet. We restore water damage 24 hours a day in San Diego!

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), water leaks in the average household can account for more than 10,000 gallons of water wasted every year, or the amount of water needed to wash 270 loads of laundry.

Our local Centre City/Uptown team has been restoring water damage in the Hillcrest community for many years. Toilet leaks can cause water damage that may not be detectable until the damage is significant, but there are ways to find out if your toilet is leaking.

Here are some tips from the EPA for detecting a toilet leak:

  • One way to find out if you have a toilet leak is to place a drop of food coloring in the toilet tank. If the color shows up in the bowl within ten minutes without flushing, you have a leak. Make sure to flush immediately after this experiment to avoid staining the tank.
  • If your toilet is leaking, the cause is often an old faulty toilet flapper. Over time, this inexpensive rubber part decays, or minerals build up on it. It’s usually best to replace the whole flapper, which is a relatively easy and inexpensive do-it-yourself project that pays for itself in no time.
